By Nicholas Johnson

On January 23rd, Montgomery Central High School will be hosting a Powerpuff Volleyball tournament within the school. Powerpuff Volleyball is a form of Volleyball where boys, who usually don’t play in the normal Volleyball season, form teams and compete in a tournament after the normal girl’s Volleyball season has concluded. Each team consists a group of 10 boys, and the team will be coached by a group of girls. There will be two teams competing in each grade, and the tournament will take place on January 23rd at 6 pm. All of the teams competing have already been accounted for, so no new teams will be accepted. There can only be one winner, so come and see who it will be.

Students weigh in on 'gif' vs 'jif'

Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) is a short animated clip that is shared frequently on the internet and on social media. It was originally created in 1987 by a team of online service providers. The pronunciation has been debated thoroughly since its inception in the late 80s. It seems like half of people believe that it is pronounced phonetically with a hard G like in “Gold”, and another half believe that it is pronounced as if it started with a J like in “Giraffe”. Both sides have strong arguments. The “G” in “GIF” stands for “Graphic”, which does have a hard G. Yet, the original creator of the GIF pronounces it as if it started with a J. As one side debates harder, the other side gets more cemented in their opinion. One thing that might finally put this to rest is a tried and true poll. 100 Montgomery Central High School students were polled, and most of them had a strong opinion on the matter. One student that was polled went so far as to say “Anyone who says JIF is a degenerate.” 63% of students pronounce it with the hard G, 26% of students pronounced it with a J, and 11% either had no preference or didn’t know what a GIF was. Thus, it seems that the majority would suggest that everyone trade in your Js for Gs, because GIF sounds like it looks: with a hard G. Nevertheless, the debate will likely continue.

The first Hot Dog was believed to be made in the 13th century in Frankfurt, Germany. It is a grilled or steamed sausage link on a partially sliced bun made to fit the link. It can include condiments on top of the link including mustard, relish, chili, cheese, sauerkraut, or ketchup. Though most of America loves these brats today, there has been a recent spark in controversy on what the classification of these crowd pleasers is.

Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.” Even though it seems like it would be a cut a dry fact that a Hot Dog is a sandwich, there are still people on both sides of this discussion that would seem to swear by their stance on the matter. Proponents Hot Dogs being classified as a sandwich said things such as, “Traditionally, it’s meat between bread”,  “You can take a Hot Dog [weiner] and put it between bread”, and “It’s called a Hot Dog sandwich.” Opponents of Hot Dogs being called a sandwich seem to base this opinion on personal preference rather than the definition itself. Quotes from these people include: “Because it’s just not a sandwich,” and “It’s just an opinion.” One person said that, “Just because it’s defined as a sandwich, doesn’t make it a sandwich.” Whether people say that a Hot Dog is a sandwich or it isn't a sandwich, most can agree that it is a deliciousness lunch for a warm afternoon.
